PRESS RELEASE: Building Automation and Control Web Services Standards Published

AHR EXPO, NV, January 31, 2022 – LonMark International today shared the recent publication of ANSI/CTA-709.10 and ANSI/CTA-709.6 web services protocols, published by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) and approved as American national standards by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). LonMark International participated as a driving member in the development of these standards. The standards strive to accelerate integration of Building Automation and Control Systems (BACS) with support for diagnostic and analytic applications as well as applications enabled by artificial intelligence (AI).

The standards define the IoT Access Protocol (IAP) for accessing BACS data and services from multiple clients such as BACnet workstations and OPC UA user interfaces.  The standards also define an open interface so that BACS data can be provided to multiple applications such as web-based AI and analytics applications.  The standards establish IAP as the first open and extensible web services protocol for BACS networks.

“With approval of IAP as an ANSI/CTA standard LonMark International will take the lead in enabling an open ecosystem of smart devices and advanced AI and analytics applications,” said Rolf Bienert, executive director, LonMark International.  “LonMark International and IAP will enable new and innovative solutions for building automation and control.”

“We believe these standards hold the key to opening the interfaces from the devices in smart buildings to advanced industrial IoT applications such as AI and analytics engines,” said Ron Bernstein, chair CTA’s Consumer Electronics Committee. “This will empower building integrators to deliver innovative and new capabilities for analyzing and optimizing BACS operation.”

The standards include a catalog of hundreds of device profiles that standardize behavior for a wide variety of BACS applications. The extensive library of profiles and types was developed by industry working groups to ensure support for common BACS applications. LonMark International’s device testing and certification program ensures products using the 709.6 standard maintain interoperability with all devices that use the ANSI/CTA-709 series of standards.

For further information on these standards please visit the CTA website or contact mailto:standards@cta.tech.  Adoption and recognition of the standards by ANSI as American national standards provides additional value for system and equipment specifiers. Adopting national standards and best practices in their designs, specifiers gain a high level of confidence that systems will perform as designed.
